Saturation Diving Best Team Compositions
Two-role, three-role, and four-role squads — which composition fits your squad size and playstyle.
This page is the team composition guide for Saturation Diving. The game lets you queue solo, duo, trio, or full four-player squads, and the right composition changes dramatically with squad size. Below are the three compositions the wiki tracks every patch: a four-role meta build, a Captain-led three-role build, and an Engineer-led duo build. Pair this with the role guide and the tier list for build details.
The Four-Role Meta (Captain + Engineer + Spotter + Salvager)
The four-role meta is the canonical squad: one of each role, perk trees maxed for that role, voice comms on Discord. The Captain pilots, the Engineer mines, the Spotter pings, the Salvager banks. This composition hits the deepest hadal zones with full ore coverage and the lowest blackout rate. The downside is coordination overhead — a four-role squad needs a Captain who calls surface timing cleanly, or the squad runs out of air twice per run. Most wiki-recommended builds assume the four-role meta.
- Captain — Cryo Helix Tank + Photon Flood Array + Pressure Stability perks.
- Engineer — Hydraulic Core-Bit + Reefwalker IV + Drill Efficiency perks.
- Spotter — Dual Beam Helmet + Pulse Array Mk III + Detection Radius perks.
- Salvager — Triton Mark VII + Twin Reserve + Salvage Multiplier perks.
Three-Role: Captain + Engineer + Salvager
The Captain-led three-role drops the Spotter and uses the Captain’s Mk III sonar to cover both roles. This composition works well for speedruns because the Spotter’s call-and-response timing is the slowest part of a run. Without a Spotter, the Captain’s responsibilities balloon — they pilot, ping, and call surface — so this build only works with an experienced Captain who already knows the zone. For new Captains, keep the Spotter in the squad.
- Captain — Cryo Helix Tank + Photon Flood Array + Pulse Array Mk III + Pressure Stability perks.
- Engineer — Hydraulic Core-Bit + Reefwalker IV + Drill Efficiency perks.
- Salvager — Triton Mark VII + Twin Reserve + Salvage Multiplier perks.
Three-Role: Captain + Engineer + Spotter (No Salvager)
This is the all-rounder composition for squads that prioritize coverage over rare loot. By dropping the Salvager you lose the rare-container bonus, but you gain a second sonar carrier (Captain + Spotter) and a second lighting carrier (Captain + Spotter). The composition shines in Black Mound, where entity aggro makes the second lighting carrier more valuable than the Salvager’s loot bonus. Most wiki-tested Black Mound builds assume this composition.
- Captain — Cryo Helix Tank + Photon Flood Array + Pulse Array Mk III + Pressure Stability perks.
- Engineer — Hydraulic Core-Bit + Reefwalker IV + Drill Efficiency perks.
- Spotter — Dual Beam Helmet + Pulse Array Mk III + Detection Radius perks.
Duo: Captain + Engineer
The duo composition is the cheapest squad to field and the most forgiving for new divers. The Captain and Engineer share sonar and lighting duties, with the Captain taking the Mk III sonar and the Engineer carrying the Photon Flood Array as their off-role tool. Duo squads cap out at Mid Ridge because neither player has the Pressure Stability perks to push hadal alone — for Black Mound you need a third diver.
- Captain — Cryo Helix Tank + Photon Flood Array + Pressure Stability perks.
- Engineer — Hydraulic Core-Bit + Reefwalker IV + Drill Efficiency perks.
Solo (Captain Only)
Solo play is technically possible but not recommended for hadal content. A solo Captain can clear Twilight Reef and low-Mid Ridge, but the moment you cross 3.5 atm, the lack of a Spotter means entity aggro chains you without warning. Solo runs are best reserved for grinding credits on shallow Twilight Reef while you wait for a full squad to assemble. The wiki tracks solo clear times on the updates tracker so you can see which zones are still solo-viable after each patch.
- Captain — Cryo Helix Tank + Photon Flood Array + Pulse Array Mk III + Pressure Stability perks.
Squad Bonus Math
Squad bonuses stack additively, with diminishing returns after three divers. A Captain + Salvager duo yields roughly 33% more ore than solo. A Captain + Engineer + Salvager trio yields roughly 50% more. The full four-role meta yields roughly 60% more. The bonuses come from in-game synergy perks (the Captain’s coordination aura, the Salvager’s loot radar, the Spotter’s call timing) — they are baked into the role, not the gear. The wiki’s tier list ranks gear within each role but does not modify these bonuses; the squad bonus is fixed per composition.
When To Swap Roles Mid-Run
The game does not allow role swaps mid-run. Roles are locked when you join the squad from the lobby, and the only way to change is to surface, leave the squad, and rejoin with a different role. The wiki recommends picking your role before the run starts based on squad needs, not improvising mid-run. If you are unsure which role to pick, default to Engineer — Engineers are the easiest role to learn and the most flexible for filling gaps in any composition.
Loot Distribution In Public Lobbies
In public lobbies, loot is auto-distributed by the host’s lobby rules. The default rule is even split among squadmates; experienced hosts often switch to weighted distribution where the Salvager gets the rare-container drops. If you join a public lobby and the host has not configured distribution, ask before the first run — the wiki flags common miscommunications on the updates tracker so you can spot them before the run starts.
How Compositions Change Per Patch
Every patch reshuffles the composition meta slightly. The wiki tracks the top three compositions per patch on the tier list and notes the date the meta settled. The two patterns to watch are: (1) a role gets a major buff (Spotter detection radius increase in the July 2026 patch) and Spotter becomes mandatory in every composition; (2) a role gets a major nerf (Engineer drill efficiency drop in the May 2026 patch) and Engineer starts showing up as a duo role only. Both patterns are temporary: the meta settles within a week and the credit math returns to the trio above.
Common Mistakes
The most common mistake is queuing four Salvagers because loot looks tempting. Four Salvagers have no sonar coverage, no lighting, and no coordination aura — they clear shallow zones fast but cannot push past Mid Ridge. The second most common mistake is queuing three Captains and one Engineer; the Engineer gets buried under ore and the Captains have nothing to do. The third is bringing a fresh Captain into a Black Mound squad; Captains need at least 15 hours in the role to call surface timing cleanly, and a Black Mound squad has zero margin for a miscalled surface.
How To Read The Wiki Recommendations
Every wiki recommendation comes with a patch tag. If the wiki says “Captain + Engineer + Spotter is the Black Mound meta” and the patch tag is older than 30 days, check the updates tracker for a more recent recommendation. The meta is volatile in the first week after a patch and stable for the next 6-8 weeks. Divers who follow the wiki recommendations during the volatile week tend to over-index on whatever the most recent buff was; waiting for the meta to settle usually saves credits.
Composition Cheat Sheet
Quick reference for picking a composition by squad size and target zone:
- Solo, Twilight Reef only — Captain only.
- Duo, Twilight Reef to low-Mid Ridge — Captain + Engineer.
- Trio, Mid Ridge — Captain + Engineer + Spotter (coverage build).
- Trio, Black Mound speedrun — Captain + Engineer + Salvager (loot build).
- Four-role, Black Mound to Abyssal Hollow — Captain + Engineer + Spotter + Salvager.
The cheat sheet assumes each player is perk-optimized for their role. If a player is still leveling their perk tree, drop them to a shallower zone until their perks catch up. The wiki’s upgrade guide walks through the perk priority order for each role.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best composition for a new squad?
Captain + Engineer + Spotter + Salvager, one of each role, perk-optimized. This is the canonical four-role meta and the easiest composition to learn because each diver has a clear responsibility.
Can I solo hadal zones?
Technically yes, but not recommended. The lack of a Spotter means entity aggro chains you without warning once you cross 3.5 atm. Solo play is best reserved for Twilight Reef credit grinding.
Which role is easiest for a beginner?
Engineer. The role is the most forgiving for new divers, the perk tree has clear breakpoints, and every squad needs at least one Engineer for ore coverage.
Do squad bonuses stack?
Yes, additively with diminishing returns after three divers. A Captain + Salvager duo yields about 33% more ore than solo; the full four-role meta yields about 60% more.
How often does the composition meta change?
Every patch shifts the meta slightly. The wiki tracks the top three compositions per patch on the tier list and notes the date the meta settled — usually within a week of a patch.
