Dive Gear Tier List — Drills, Suits, Tanks, Lights and Sonar Ranked

This page is the drill + suit + tank + light + sonar tier list for Saturation Diving. It complements the main tier list by drilling into gear slots individually. The wiki refreshes this list within 24 hours of every patch. Pair this with the best gear guide for upgrade ordering and the role guide for which role benefits most from each pick.

How The Tier List Is Built

Three inputs feed the rankings: raw ore-per-second under pressure, synergy with the current Captain / Engineer / Spotter / Salvager meta, and credit efficiency (how long it takes the gear to pay for itself). Each gear slot gets an S, A, B, or C tier. S means best-in-slot for that role; A means excellent and often role-specific swaps; B means solid budget options; C means outclassed and only relevant in the first hour of a fresh save. The wiki does not rank perks here — see the main tier list for perk rankings.

Drill Tier List

TierDrillWhy
SHydraulic Core-BitBest ore-per-second in the game; hidden pressure bonus on Black Mound pipes.
SCordless Hammer-DrillThe only viable drill on oxygen-starved Salvager builds. Less ore-per-second but zero air cost.
ATwin-Core HammerStrong mid-game bridge. Cheap to upgrade, falls off after level 40.
BPneumatic PickaxeSolid starter. Outclassed as soon as you can afford the Hammer-Drill.
CManual Crank DrillTutorial only. Do not invest credits past level 5.

Suit Tier List

TierSuitWhy
STriton Mark VIIOnly suit with a built-in 4.2 atm pressure cap. Mandatory for Black Mound.
AReefwalker IVBest mid-tier suit. +18% air efficiency, only Triton is better in hadal zones.
AAbyssal PlateNew since the August patch. Strong armor, weaker air efficiency than Reefwalker.
BSalvaged WetsuitFree starter. Replace by level 15.
CPatched Dive SkinTutorial cosmetic. Do not take past Twilight Reef.

Oxygen Tank Tier List

TierTankWhy
SCryo Helix TankDoubles effective oxygen time. The largest single upgrade any Captain build can buy.
ATwin ReserveTwo small tanks in one slot. Loses to Cryo Helix on raw time, wins for solo Salvager.
BStandard TankWorkable, no perks. Skip if you can afford Twin Reserve.
CSample TankFree, 60-second capacity. Tutorial only.

Light Tier List

TierLightWhy
SPhoton Flood ArrayWide cone, recharge-free. Captain / Spotter standard.
ADual Beam HelmetNarrow cone, double throw distance. Best for Spotter snipers.
ASalvaged GlowstickCheap, infinite battery, weak output. Budget pick for early Salvagers.
CHand FlashlightTutorial. Replace immediately.

Sonar Tier List

TierSonarWhy
SPulse Array Mk IIIReveals ore through three walls, longest entity ping radius. Captain standard.
AEcho TrackerSpotter only, unlocked at level 30. Best detection cone, no ore reveal.
APulse Array Mk IICheaper Mk II, two walls of ore reveal. Good Captain budget pick.
BPulse Array Mk IOne wall. Useful only for the first five levels.

Per-Gear Role Synergy

The same gear scores differently per role. The Hydraulic Core-Bit is S-tier for Engineer and A-tier for Captain (because Captains mine less often) and C-tier for Salvager (because Salvagers prioritize rare containers, not bulk ore). The wiki tracks role-specific tiers in the tier list so you can see which pick to make per slot. The general pattern: Engineer and Salvager prioritize offensive gear (drills, tanks), Captain and Spotter prioritize support gear (lights, sonars).

How To Read The Patch Impact

Every patch reshuffles this list slightly. The wiki flags every rebalance on the updates tracker within an hour, so check the updates page before any major credit dump. The two patterns to watch are: (1) a drill gets nerfed and the next-best option becomes the new meta — usually a mid-tier drill jumps one tier; (2) a tank gets buffed and the upgrade priority shifts — usually a B-tier tank jumps into A-tier for a single patch. Both patterns are temporary: the meta settles within a week and the credit math returns to the trio above.

Common Mistakes

The most common mistake is buying the Cryo Helix Tank before you have the Pressure Stability perks to back it up. The Cryo Helix extends your air time, but if you are taking pressure damage in hadal zones, you will still black out — just with more margin before you run out of oxygen. The second most common mistake is skipping the Photon Flood Array as a Captain because the Salvaged Glowstick feels good enough; in Black Mound the Glowstick’s narrow cone gets you cornered by entities. The third is investing credits in perk rerolls in the first ten levels — every perk reroll is wasted credits because the perk tree resets at level 15.

When To Buy From This List

Follow this list only after you have the first thousand credits worth of gear already equipped. Buying a Cryo Helix Tank on a fresh save is wasted credits because you have not yet unlocked the zones that need it. The wiki’s upgrade priority is: starter gear first, then mid-tier upgrades by level 15, then the endgame trio by level 25. Anything earlier is a credit trap.

Why Beta Tier Lists Move Fast

Saturation Diving is a beta title, so the developer rebalances gear more aggressively than a shipped game. The wiki tracks every rebalance on the updates tracker and flags any gear that moved two tiers in a single patch (rare but happens during major reworks). Divers who check the tier list daily during a beta patch cycle tend to spend credits too eagerly — wait for the meta to settle, usually within a week, before committing to a major credit dump.

How To Report A Tier Disagreement

If you think a piece of gear is mis-tiered, file a report via the footer contact channel with the gear name, the tier you think it should be, and the run data you used to reach that conclusion (ore-per-second under pressure, credit efficiency, role synergy). The wiki maintains a public Trello board where community tier votes are tallied; the next patch refresh consults the public votes before locking the new tiers. Reports without run data are usually not actionable, so include screenshots if you can.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How often is this tier list updated?

Within 24 hours of every patch. The wiki tracks every rebalance on the updates tracker and refreshes the tier list as soon as the patch notes drop.

Why is the same gear ranked differently in different roles?

Because gear is role-dependent. The Hydraulic Core-Bit is S-tier for Engineer and A-tier for Captain — Captains mine less often and need sonar + lighting more than raw drill power.

Can I trust the tier list during the first week after a patch?

Wait at least a week. The tier list is volatile in the first 24 hours after a patch and settles within a week. Divers who follow the wiki during the volatile week tend to over-index on the most recent buff.

What if I disagree with a tier rating?

File a report via the footer contact channel with the gear name, the tier you think it should be, and your run data. The wiki maintains a public Trello board where community votes are tallied before each patch.

Is there a printable version?

Not yet. The wiki tracks print-friendly versions on the Trello tooling card; in the meantime, copy-paste the table into a notes app for offline reference.
