Saturation Diving Diver Roles

How Captain, Engineer, Spotter, and Salvager shape every dive — and which role fits your style.

Saturation Diving Roles — Captain, Engineer, Spotter, Salvager

Saturation Diving ships four diver roles. Each one changes which gear perks apply, where on the upgrade tree you spend credits, and how you queue up with the rest of the squad. There is no single “best” role — the four roles are tuned to synergize inside a four-person dive party, so the strongest lobbies mix two roles from the support side and two from the dive side.

Captain — The Dive Lead

The Captain is the anchor of the squad. They pilot the submarine, manage surface-to-dive comms, and call entity pings using the Pulse Array Mk III sonar upgrade. Captains do not usually mine, but they earn bonus credits equal to 15% of ore recovered by any diver under their command radius.

  • Best gear tracks: Oxygen Tank (Cryo Helix Tank), Light (Photon Flood Array), Sonar (Pulse Array Mk III).
  • Skill priorities: Radio Protocol → Pressure Reading → Salvage Bonus.
  • Playstyle: Stay near the sub, keep sonar on, call out pings, escort divers back when air is low.

Engineer — The Ore Engine

The Engineer runs the Hydraulic Core-Bit drill and routes broken ore to the salvage queue. Engineers are the highest individual ore earners in the squad, but they burn air faster and have the lowest HP pool without a Hazmat Suit upgrade.

  • Best gear tracks: Drill (Hydraulic Core-Bit), Hazmat (Reefwalker IV → Triton Mark VII), Light (Dual Beam Helmet).
  • Skill priorities: Pressure Stability → Drill Efficiency → Recharge Speed.
  • Playstyle: Pair with a Spotter, focus pipes and geodes, swap to defense during entity pings.

Spotter — The Sniper Eye

The Spotter perches on high ground with the Dual Beam Helmet and clears threats before they close. They earn bonus karma for entity kills and unlock access to the rare Echo Tracker sonar upgrade at level 30.

  • Best gear tracks: Light (Dual Beam Helmet), Sonar (Pulse Array Mk III), Drill (Cordless Hammer-Drill — for emergencies).
  • Skill priorities: Aiming Protocol → Detection Radius → Echo Tracker.
  • Playstyle: Stay back, mark targets with light, ping entities, escort the Engineer.

Salvager — The Pressure Runner

The Salvager does the risky late-dive pickups — wrecks, deep pockets, and abandoned crates that the rest of the squad skipped. They earn a salvage-multiplier perk that doubles rare loot from Black Mound and Abyssal Hollow wrecks.

  • Best gear tracks: Hazmat (Triton Mark VII), Oxygen (Twin Reserve), Light (Salvaged Glowstick — until tier-up).
  • Skill priorities: Pressure Resistance → Salvage Multiplier → Quick-Swap.
  • Playstyle: Dive late, take the long route, grab the high-value wreck crates, hand off to the Engineer.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Which role is best for solo play?

Salvager or Captain. Salvager because the salvage multiplier compounds on solo loot, and Captain because the 15% ore bonus only requires you to be in range of your own diver on a private server.

Can you swap roles mid-dive?

No. Roles are locked at server join. To swap roles, leave the server and rejoin — you keep your credits, gear, and level progress.

Do roles affect which zones you can enter?

Roles affect gear perks, not zone access. Any role can enter any zone if they have the gear and pressure resistance. The Salvager perk just makes the high-pressure zones far more rewarding.

Is there a hidden fifth role?

Not in the public beta. The development Trello has hinted at a "Diver Medic" role for a future patch — we will update this page when it ships.
